As for a written report, I will simply quote Harold Medd’s Google Groups email:

    “Hi Sabre Sailors
    Albert sailing Club Winter Regatta
Well, Albert Park Lake did not let us down. The wind was shifty, very variable in strength and the course was crowded. Not quite the 100 boats but with the wind in the South West, Albert Sailing Club’s race officers had to adopt a short course across the lake. 16 sabres took part of which 12 were visitors. There were 10 races over two days. Chris Dance and Pete Hackett dominated the series winning all but one race between them with the overall result coming down to the last race which was won by Chris. The one race they didn’t win was a great result for Bruce Abbott on his 70th Birthday. Congratulations Bruce on the win and on joining the over 70s division. The over 70s division just got a whole lot tougher for me. Steve Douglas took 3rd place overall. There is an excellent series of photos of the event taken by Rob Cruze. The following is a link to Rob’s web site. If it doesn’t work can look up Albert Sailing Club, click on ‘Winter Regatta’ and ‘Senior Photos’. [see links above]

    Selected Photos
… I hope I have attached two photographs of the event. The first is a great shot of Bruce Abbott, not sure if this is his winning race but its nice to think it is. The second gives a better impression of the regatta. It shows Peter White leading a bunch of Sabres which include Pete Hackett 1879, Rabdall Garnham 1782 avoiding a disabled Laser and George Solonari 1759 trying to work out how to get out of the Laser trap which is always feature of the regatta.

    Next Winter Series
If you missed the regatta you can make up for it this weekend when the Sabre Winter Series goes to Albert sailing Club again.”

Thanks again to Harold, and congratulations to everyone who contributed to the success of our Regatta. We look forward to continuing visits from sailors, friends & family over the winter, and of course an even better regatta in 2013.

    Cheers,
    Ron Fergusson

    Hi everyone,

Who is looking to enter for this weekend’s regatta? Don’t forget that the aggregate score from the Regatta counts to the 2012 Sabre Winter Series.

So far we will have the usual suspects from ASC, plus three visitors already entered online: Susannah Gillam from WSC, Wendy Wilson from SSYC (sailing Geoff Saliba’s old boat), and Steven Douglas from BRYC, in yet another new boat. I’m sure there’ll be lots more entering soon!

    Enter online by Wednesday via: https://www.topyachtsoftware.com/db/otb/series_select.php?EventID=58, pay $30 online or in person on the day;
or by paper entry on the day pay $35 for the regatta, or $10 per half-day session.

At this stage the weather looks a little wintery per the BOM forecast, but nothing a wetsuit and jumper/thermals and a hot drink afterwards won’t deal with. And there’s little risk of a drifter nor a blowout.

Hope to see you on the lake,
    Ron.

    – view entrants: https://www.topyachtsoftware.com/db/otb/entrants_display.php?SeriesID=102&Task=ShowSeriesEntrants&EventID=58

We look forward to another great visit from the sabre assocation. The mulled wine, hot soup and after race BBQ will all be available as in previous years.

PS. ASC does not have scheduled racing over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend; we resume racing on 16th June. Full winter schedule:
    http://albertsc.org.au/index.php/racing/2012-winter-season/

We have also been practicing our short course racing and on-water recording of finishes, so all should be perfect for the regatta on 23-24th June.

Any further information required, please contact me.

    Cheers,
    Ron.

Well it is only 2 days to go before the start of our Winter Regatta. The weather is looking good for both days with light to medium winds from the north on both days. We are expecting to get multiple races in and the fleets will be split between the juniors and senior fleets. Regular Albert Sailing Club sailors are reminded that the first race on Saturday starts at 1:45 not 2:00PM!
Registration: Please remember if you are only planning to sail on the Saturday, then please register. It will make the work for our volunteers on the day easier. Closing date for online registrations has been extended until Thursday the 23rd of June — this is your last chance to register online. If you do miss out you can register at the club on Saturday. Visit the Regatta website http://albertsc.org.au/index.php/racing/2011-asc-winter-regatta/ to register. If you are on twitter you can follow updates, just search for #ASCWR.
Weather Saturday: Northerly 5 to 10 knots – Partly cloudy 17°
Weather Sunday: North to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots tending westerly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon then easing to 10 knots or less during the evening. Partly cloudy. Isolated showers from the late morning. 16°
On the regatta website the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions are available for you to download.

Hi everyone, at this stage we only have seven Sabres entered online. Online entry closes Wednesday night, can you please encourage sailors to enter online ASAP, that will save the tower people going into meltdown on Saturday trying to manually enter everyone into the computer. Late entry will still be available both Saturday & Sunday, if people really do want to enter late by paper form. Regatta website:
    http://albertsc.org.au/index.php/racing/2011-asc-winter-regatta/
Current weather reports for Saturday & Sunday look pretty good, as good as we could reasonably hope for, breeze temperature and minimal rain wise.
    Ron.

Hello everyone, please see below from the ASC Rear Commodore, Rod Thomas:

Sabre Winter Series Race (H7) at Albert Sailing Club on 24 July

Heat 7 of the Sabre Winter Series is to be sailed at Albert Sailing Club on Albert Park Lake on Saturday 24 July. The Information Session is at 1.15pm for a 2.00pm first Division start. Another good Sabre fleet is expected with the home club’s Sabre fleet joined by visiting Sabres from other clubs. If you are participating, there is plenty of room next to and in front of the club for rigging of boats. Don’t forget to purchase a $2 all day parking ticket from the machines in the parking area behind the club, and display on your dashboard.

Report of ASC Regatta results and photos etc

Albert Sailing Club’s annual winter regatta on Albert Park Lake on 19 and 20 June was a well attended and successful regatta with over 130 monohull dinghies competing in a short race format series of seven 30 – 40 minute races over 1.5 days. Racing was concentrated in the four most active dinghy sailing classes currently racing in Victoria – the Laser, Impulse, Sabre and junior Optimist classes.

There were 21 entries in the Sabre class across the weekend, with 13 Sabres sailing both days. Three boats from Black Rock dominated racing with the current State Sabre champion Chris Dance the overall winner. Chris has sailed at Albert since his junior days and used his experience in shifting breezes to his advantage well. Nick Mouat and Gary McLennan had two heat wins each, and finished close behind Chris in the final placings. Ron Fergusson from Albert finished fourth overall and won the “Masters” 45 – 55 years age group, with Harold Medd 8th and first Sabre Grand Master. James McLennan sailed well to win the Regatta in the Optimist class – watch out Dad !

Full results and a range of photos of the Albert Sailing Club winter regatta, including some good ones of Sabre sailors, are on http://www.albertsc.org.au. The regatta and the Sabre class winter series races are part of Albert Sailing Club’s annual winter season which runs through to late September. Visitors are always welcome either on a daily Visitor entry or a winter season membership.

I’ve just posted a small correction to the previous message:
CORRECTION: Sea Scouts’ Regatta is now on 30-31 August, so no club sailing at ASC on 30 August.

Looking forward to seeing lots of Sabres at ASC on 9/8/08 for the visit of the Sabre Winter Series!
