Like to thank those people for the interest they have taken in this protest I value all your comments – by the way i actually did call no buoy room not buoy room- I did not know Ryan a young enthusiastic queensland sabre sailor prior to the incident , unlike many protest where the protest leads to estrangement beteen the parties for the rest of the regatta we became friends wishing each other well before each race
sabre_adminKeymasteryeah while i guess i was really pleased to get second in the grand masters which was easily the largest division with around 17 entrants especially when i was generally disappointed with my own sailing never really mastering the conflict between the shifts and the current – it was also interesting to listen to phil briggs comment how sailing is such a great thing or was -where you have sailing you dont have drugs etc -but even he must be wondering where sailing is going with the majority of sailors in the regatta having passed their 45 birthday and where you only had to enter the regatta to win first prize in the junior division-i wonder whether the owners of microsoft will look back one day and say if only those kids had stayed at their computers we would not have drug problems-ha ha you figure it out
sabre_adminKeymasterhi steve- i have done the following nationals cleveland 2006,eden 2004,blairgowrie 2003,brighton 2002,cleveland 2001,toukley 1999, black rock 1998, largs bay 1997,brighton 1992,kingston (tas) 1991, lake boga 1990. rye 1989,largs bay 1988, lindisfarne 1987 and gippsland 1986- John Gratton from brighton has completed many but i do not know anybody who was doing nationals before me and is still doing them thanks peter ( the gap between 97 and 92 was when i really got into triathlon hey but then i rekoned that sabres were more fun
sabre_adminKeymasterGee Andrew i thought of all people you would know the rules- a committee person too -i don’t believe it
sabre_adminKeymasterYes i remeber Mirage- like all the botterill composites a very good boat . I believe it was bought by Charles Csabi who sailed sabres for many years at Safety Beach but sold the boat when he moved to North Queensland- Charles always bragged that he bought the boat for a song because whoever had it built, never took delivery and it went into botterill stock before being sold to Charles- a well known female sailor from blairgowrie bought it from Charles but only kept it a few years before buying a brand new plywood boat
sabre_adminKeymasterTo prove that we at black Rock are as much about participation as competition – We are not only entering our own super legendery Oranges and Lemons Team, but my own team will be boosted by a really good friend of mine and recent national champion and our goal is specifically compete directlly with the oranges and lemons as much as our friends from blaigowrie- we also propose to mix other experienced sailors in our other teams to boost our depth- Peter Reid Black Rock Sabre Rep
sabre_adminKeymasterFrom Goondiwindi we southerners have a choice of entering Brisbane either through Warwick or Toowoombah and you get differing views of which one to use- When travelling to the last Nationals with John and Phil we came in via Toowoomba and returned via Warwick- personally i found the Toowoombah Rd much more comfotable even though leaving Toowoombah was a bit scary as it had the feel of driving off the edge of a cliff- having said that i still think it is an easier trip- This will be my first away Nationals in a decade that i have not travelled with John Seeber (he passed away 14 months ago) and yeah I am really going to miss him
sabre_adminKeymasterHi Matt-an old sabre may not necessarily be trashed because it is old-it all depends how much work it has done and how well it has been maintained by its several owners-usually the mast would be showing some signs of corrosion if it is original- i think the most common faults are that sabres tend to add weight with age and loose their stiffness on the floor of the hull- i am not sure whether the loss of stiffness is something that just naturally occurs or is a result of bouncing around on rough seas-also sabre shapes have progressed alot since 475 was bult so it would not have the streamlined shape that sabres gradually became somewhere after 1300-but having said that if all you want is something to have fun in-then so long as the paint is maintained there is no reason why it would not sail round the bouys for a few more seasons
sabre_adminKeymasterPhil Johnson built my sabre (endorphin 1555) Phils boats have made up atleast 50% of the top 10 in Nationals lately- when i ordered my boat in 1997 Phil had only ever built sabres for himself and resold them- but decided to make kits for those with the time and expertise for assembly- It was my own preference for Phil to assemble the boat including painting for me- I have never looked back and have returned from nearly every Nationals/ states i have entered with some sort of a trophy- undoubtedly it was my omprovement that lead to phil’s boats (express boatworks)being so popular at blackrock- Phil makes them in kit form-the result speak for themselves
sabre_adminKeymasterhi Sue i am sure the measurer has no objection to lines other than vb cord being used so long as the risk of the mast falling on your head is minimized. Most things that contravene the rules relate to fittings that people see on other yachts and want to use them on sabres-the fundamental thing in sabres is to keep it simple-keep it cheap- we want as many people sailing sabres as possible -we dont want people pulling perfectly good gear off their boats simply to keep up with the latest gizmo that has come on to the market
sabre_adminKeymasteri like gadgets so i thought that tensioning thing was really hot- however i am used to the double loop for tensioning- so i will stick with it- the problem i have is overtensioning the forestay which i am sure kills speed on reaches yeah texta on blind cord seems very un 21 century but as little johnny would say if it aint broke why fix it
sabre_adminKeymasterMy sister Margaret Neeson is enthusiastic about sailing at clevaland for the nationals-If anyone owns a double trailer and is only taking one Sabre or anyone who owns a double sabre trailor who is not going could loan it so i could tow both our sabres could get in touch as Margaret has been sailing very well last season and is keen to go to queensland
sabre_adminKeymasterHi Ben- had a most enjoyable sail on the pondage on sunday (due to other stuff i only had one day available)-the wind was very shifty and made for real challenging sailing -despite the water being warm, the wind was icy so i am glad i did not go in cos i think the wind chill would have been real nasty- could not figure out why only the upwind seem to be windy while the downwinds were light anyway a great day out on a very pretty sailing location- sabre 1555 endorphin- Peter Reid
sabre_adminKeymasterhi- venturies- be careful when putting in a rear ventuy- i put mine to near the transom and it caused cavitation so bad that the rudder control was neutralised so i went swimming in big breezes – it is a problem-the futher aft the bigger the cavitation-the futher forward the bigger the puddle between the rear of the venturie and the transom
sabre_adminKeymastermy philosophy is a good event when the wind blows harder than 15 knots-i can tolerate all the human errors eg toukley last race
