    Hi Shane,

I think a good weight range for the Sabre is 65 – 72 kg. You can be competitive in all conditions in this weight range. Having said that, the Sabre carries weight pretty well, so if you are up to around 80 kg you can still do really well in light conditions, but it’s more of a struggle. For example, Wayne Bates is around 80 kg and he has won more national titles than anyone in Sabre history!

    Andrew,
Thanks for the tips. I think I’ll try the thin rope under the gunwhales as you suggested. Also, I’ve put a U bolt on the stern to which I’ll attach a rope that I wear as a belt. It will have a clip on one end and a loop on the other to put my foot in. When I go in and the boat has righted I’ll clip the belt on the stern u-bolt and step up and wiggle over. Thursday I’ll see if I need to put it in practice.
Will let you know how things go. I shortened the tiller extension which was the biggest culprit in tipping me over when coming about. It just got stuck everywhere.
I will also try my darnedest not to go over. It was exhausting!

    Hi Christie

Some people have elastic from their side stays to the thwart on each side.
But I have also seen boats with a fine rope all the way round under the gunwhale.

It is a bit of an art which you hope not to use too much, but when the boat starts to wright push down on the gunwhale and in the same motion pull yourself in.

Also, if you know your going over try and go over the top and onto the centre board.

Same as anything, practice makes perfect.

    cheers and happy sailing.

    Hi Phil

Nationals at Lindisfarne are from the 28th Dec 2004 to 4th Jan 2005.
The invitation race will be sailed on the 28th Dec 2004.

Hope to get the notice of race etc. out early in the year.

Some A3 posters exactly like the ones displayed at Eden should go up in most of your clubs soon. I gave these and some info packs to Barry on presentation night.

If there’s anything else you need to know please let me know.

    Cheers

Have the dates been set. Difficult to make bookings without a program.

You will need 2No sheets of 4mm and 2no of 5mm ply. If you cannot get any 5mm you may use 4mm and bring the thickness up to 4.5mm by fibreglassing one or both sides of the bottom panels of the boat.

    Shane,

    That doesn’t sound promising.

We’ll be able to have a look at most of the Sydney to Hobart yachts in Eden then.

But hopefully their forecasts are wrong for everyones sake!!!

Rain, hail or shine, the sabre class always has a good time!!!

How did you go from 44 to 35 or should that be 45.

Have you organised fine weather and 10-20 knots for the week Shane???

    Hi Petro,

To the best of my knowledge there are no restrictions on toe straps. Just make sure they are attached to a strong point of the boat. Most people attach them to the front buoyancy tank while others attach them to the front of the centreboard case. I have even seen one boat with two sets of toe straps – one led to the front for beating, the other set attached out wide for hiking when going downwind on heavy days. I think this is a bit excessive, but it emphasises the flexibility you have within the rules.

The VYC yardstick is 126.5 (down from 128 a few years ago).

I would shorten the shrouds before trying to cut the stainless steel.
I there are other sabres around, compare the lengths of your shrouds (ie wire and eyelets, not including chainplates) with them. A new set of shrouds is about $30 made up by a chandler.

    Hello Lea

You can have as many holes in your chainplates as you like. The only restriction is that you do not adjust the side stays or the forestay when racing.
