Scott OlsenParticipant
Peter – you are correct here. The National Measurer recently became aware of a centreboard case design that is present on a small number of Sabres built in the past year. This was discussed at length at a national committee level last week and the committee concurs with the Measurer’s view that the centreboard cases in question do not comply with class rules. The owners of these boats were advised of this by email, and we have also had discussions with the current owner of the mould producing these boats such that there will be no further boats made using this centreboard case. The Association is wanting to ensure that a modification is designed so that the impacted boats may be remedied quickly and simply and steps are being taken to achieve this. At the same time we are looking at how measurement processes can be strengthened to ensure prompt identification and reporting to the National Measurer of any future design or similar alterations going forward. We will also be considering whether any specific rule changes are needed in relation to centre case construction. It is also worth noting that the only boat competing in last weekend’s SA state championships with the different centre case sailed with a packer inside the case to in effect make it identical to a conventional case. The Association does intend making further comment on the web site when issues with the owners and builder have been resolved.

Great Post !
Bring on Adelaide, look forward to seeing your new pride & joy, and for the Sabre class – farewell to a tricky but transformational 2014 – and bring on 2015 !
Cheers

Scott OlsenParticipantThe FS website makes it sound like they’ve created a design break-through boat – and by implication that our rules are open to innovation to permit this. Isn’t marketing wonderful ! Just like McDonalds can make a Big Mac sound like some gourmet healthy treat. If I had a new mould I’d be talking it up too – good on him.
I know the national committee wishes Jim success with his new mould – it’s always great to see builders showing their optimism for the future of the class by doing this. But be assured – the mould measures in terms of the old rules and the rule changes made last year; and would also measure under new strengthened rules that will hopefully flow this year from the inaugural national measurer’s meeting last month (if approved by state associations). It’s not a controversial shape. It’s not Ben Lexcen’s Australia II’s winged keel. It’s not being ‘rushed through’. But Jim has every right to build a new mould that differs from his existing one. As did YMS when it created its current mould mid last decade. As did Botterill in the last 90’s. It’s OK to build a new mould – but what wouldn’t be OK would be if any builder starts ‘playing games’. Fortunately none of the existing (or FS) moulds have done this – and new rules will ensure that that’s the way it stays. New moulds will have to produce Sabres that look like Sabres and indeed emulate the shape of plywood boats.

With ‘factory fit-out’ boats, Brett is just using a standard saddle – mounted with two thick screws. It works a treat.
1771 heh ?

Scott OlsenParticipantAaah yes. Hayden Llewellyn’s pevious boat – and Natalie Farrell before that. Hayden sails out of Blairgowrie.
Scott OlsenParticipantIt means that the boat used to be sailed at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron in Victoria. A peculiar club rule at the club is that all boats at the club have to have the red b on their sail. It isn’t enforced any more, but most boats at the club got the b up until about 5 years ago. Easy to peel off ! By the way – what is the name of the boat ?
Scott OlsenParticipantRon – results have at last been posted on the Vic site. Have emailed you the ‘shot of the series’ !
Scott OlsenParticipantWell folks – we’ll publish something more substantial on the site in coming days – but confirming that next summer’s nationals will indeed be ‘safe at the beach’ as Richard put it. The nationals will be held at Safety Beach Sailing Club on Port Phillip Bay (Safety Beach is about an hour from Melbourne, on the Mornington Peninsula). We just got the OK from the club this morning.
Scott OlsenParticipantFi
At least another 7 Blairgowrie boats are confirmed, and I haven’t yet had reponses from all. So add Geoff Smith, Allan Riley, Albert Riley, John Petschell, Rob Hartnett, Callum Burns and Andrew Little to your list.

Scott OlsenParticipantAt least it does say ‘or at the discretion of the race officer’ – so maybe there is hope yet ! It does seem odd though given that the titles in SA last time were also at Brighton – and they didn’t have gate starts then. Wonder where the impetus has come from ?
Scott OlsenParticipantThanks Anne for arranging this – see you in a few weeks
Scott OlsenParticipantAs some of us are arriving in the evening of 27 Dec, I’d like to be dropping off my boat, unpacking it, and going for a sale in the morning of 28 Dec. Don’t need access to the clubhouse – just the gate open !
Scott OlsenParticipant….I thiought I knew the rules, but the way the NOR is written it looks like they’ve been relaxed. Just want to confirm it !
Scott OlsenParticipantGetting close now…..
Now that the early-bird pricing is complete – can we have an update on the numbers of entries ?
Also – just wondering about measurement. The NOR says that we have to present a sail, and foils signed by our state measurer. Does it matter when they were signed – eg is last year OK ?
Cheers
Andrew
Scott OlsenParticipantGood points there – probably sums up what a number of people had been thinking, but hadn’t put down on paper as yet !
