15 Sabres entered for the Walpole Regatta in the Trees over the Labor Day weekend and on Saturday afternoon, the competition was already hotting up. Sabres from EFYC, Perth Dinghy Club, Walpole YC and Safety Bay SC were represented.
Conditions on Saturday were cool and overcast, with some drizzle persisting. Wind was 12 to 15 knots SE and two races were sailed.
On Sunday, the wind was initially light to moderate, 10 to 15 knots, but it built to 16 knots in the afternoon. One race was sailed in the morning and two in the afternoon. As the wind increased, the short wave chop increased and made sailing to windward hard.
After a hard fought series of 5 races, the overall result was Pete Coop first, with Graham Hill in second place and Carl Girolamol in third.
This regatta is becoming one of the premier events outside the metro area and increased numbers are anticipated next year. It is an outstanding area to sail, the local Sabre sailors are keen and the organization of the Regatta is impressive.
